• In the wake of recent debates, fights, mass murders, and assassinations, the American people have had quite the stir up related to gun control. But are guns the issue here, or is it mental instability?

The American people cannot seem to reach a middle ground when it comes to guns but we need to look at the stats. In 2024, about 44,000 gun related deaths were reported, 27,600 of those were suicides. If we look at gun related deaths in children (ages 1-18), there have been between 2,200-3,500 deaths reported. In 2023, 63% of those deaths were a result of assaults, 29% were suicides, and 5% were accidental. If we take a closer look at that scarily high percentage of 63% and we take into account the school shootings and assassinations and/or attempts in recent times, you will see that these numbers do not paint America as a particularly safe place for our children.

Are guns really the sole issue here? The answer in inconclusive.

Personally, I do believe this is a mental health epidemic. Judging based on the shooters who’ve been convicted of school shootings they all seem to have this ‘everyone is against me’ mindset. The victim complex within these individuals is too complicated for me to even begin to understand.

The Parkland shooter, Nikolas Cruz, had a motive to absolutely ruin Valentine’s Day for the students of Marjory Stoneman Douglas HIgh School because he simply felt “unloved”. Nikolas also displayed alarming behavior prior to the mass shooting. Psychologists confirmed he suffered from severe mental and emotional issues and perceived social rejection.

The Sandy Hook shooter, Adam Lanza, displayed his own mental health issues including anxiety and OCD. He very deeply isolated himself from others as well as had a morbid obsession with mass murder, leading to him killing his own mother and then unleashing a firearm upon an elementary school.

In conclusion, the violence that has taken place in this country is truly disturbing and I’m not sure if it will ever come to an end if we don’t get our heads out of our asses. Wake up America, we need to act now.

  • The murder of Charlie Kirk was, and still is, quite a controversial topic. Why is that? The answers are mixed.

It is important to remember that murder is, well, illegal. Yet we have many individuals from all over the country celebrating Charlie Kirk’s assassination. Now, he was not a very well recieved man upon the left. But the man held no political power. He was a debater, a husband, a father, a son, and most importantly a human being. Many say his takes were violent, some say he was a racist, a homophobe, and a fascist. Agree or not, his death did not bring an end to these philosophies. Hell, I did not agree with nearly anything he said in his debates, but sniping him in the neck in front of hundreds of people on a college campus? What ever happened to free speech?

You are not immune to the same fate. Be careful of what you post and say online.
This is not about Republicans V Democrats anymore. This is humanity turning on itself. His wife and children were there, watching him bleed out right in front of them. For those who are celebrating this, they are part of the problem. This sort of thing can happen to anyone on either side of the fence, so they may be laughing and celebrating now, but if this sort of thing were to happen to someone they supported, they would be in shambles. This will now permenently change the U.S’s political landscape. None of this is acceptable by any means. The lack of empathy and influx of celebratory memes does not make this a lighthearted thing, this only justifies killing people because of their opinions and beliefs no matter the fact that they hold absolutely no political power or legeslative power whatsoever. We are coming dangerously close to not even being able to tell others our beliefs or what we stand for without the fear of getting murdered like Charlie. This goes for both sides of the fence. The same individuals who are advocating for this do not realise this same exact thing can happen to them if this continues. The behavior I have seen from some people lately is truly disturbing.

Will we ever reach a middle ground?
